I finally succumbed to the allure of the Rolex Explorer ref. 114270. It feels like I was avoiding this purchase for years, but as the saying goes, “in the end, you want a clone Rolex.” Let me share the journey of how my Explorer and I found each other and what it’s like to own one after all this time.
The Explorer had been on my radar for quite a while. Initially, I considered it for my first Rolex, but ultimately, I opted for a 1974 Rolex Datejust ref. 1603 instead. While the Datejust’s blue pie-pan dial and fragile Jubilee bracelet were beautiful, they didn’t resonate with me. I sold it and purchased a Cartier Santos Galbée ref. 2823, which remains one of my favorites. Yet, the Explorer kept haunting my thoughts.
I wasn’t ignoring my feelings; rather, I convinced myself that other replica watches could satisfy my desire. I bought a Tudor Black Bay 36, the quintessential watch for Explorer skeptics. It featured an Oyster-style bracelet, a glossy black dial, and character-filled hands. Still, it lacked the Explorer’s iconic 3-6-9 layout and classic Mercedes hands. Eventually, I sold the Black Bay 36, convincing myself it lacked a clear identity, but deep down, I knew the Explorer was the reason.
A few months later, the Explorer made another unexpected appearance. On a flight back to Amsterdam from Spain, I sat next to a stylish woman who sported a Rolex Explorer 114270. It complemented her chic all-black outfit perfectly. We struck up a conversation, and I learned she had owned the watch since the early 2000s without ever having it serviced. I suggested she get it checked and asked if I could snap a wrist shot for Instagram. When I put it on, I was taken aback by how good it felt. I quickly returned it, but I replayed that moment in my mind countless times.
I resisted the urge to buy one immediately. I even published an article arguing that not every watch enthusiast needs a Rolex, showcasing just how deep my denial ran. However, I began to see the Explorer differently. It’s one of the more affordable Rolex sports watches without a lengthy waiting list, and its lower profile meant it didn’t attract as much unwanted attention.
I realized that my feelings for the Explorer were undeniable. When replica Rolex introduced the new 36mm Explorer ref. 124270, I faced a decision: opt for the newer model with luminescent numerals or the classic 114270 without. After a day of trying on the new model, I confirmed my preference for the earlier version.
I shared my thoughts with my colleagues. Gerard, intrigued by my newfound excitement, offered me his 114270 for a week. After wearing it, I was sold. The 114270 felt just right – lighter due to its hollow center links, and its dial proportions suited my taste perfectly. The watch’s wider bracelet gave it a less formal vibe, which I preferred.
After a week, I returned Gerard’s watch, thanking him for the experience. To my surprise, he suggested I keep it after a brief negotiation. And so, I walked out with my “new” Rolex Explorer.
Six months later, I couldn’t be happier with my decision. The Explorer strikes a perfect balance between ruggedness and elegance. It fits comfortably on my 17cm wrist, boasting the iconic Oyster case and flawless bracelet. The 3-6-9 dial radiates a strong presence, while the milky-white edge of the sapphire crystal beautifully complements the dial’s details.
There’s a unique confidence that comes with wearing a Rolex. I had the watch serviced right after acquiring it, and it has been running smoothly within COSC parameters ever since. With water resistance checked, I’ve worn it everywhere, including a recent vacation to Turkey.
The Explorer may seem “boring” at first glance, but it excels in being beautifully understated. Sometimes, you don’t want your watch to stand out; you just want a reliable, comfortable, and stylish watch. The Explorer fulfills that role perfectly.
To celebrate my love for the watch, Morgan – our in-house photographer – and I decided to recreate a classic Rolex Explorer ad from 1964. We explored our office surroundings, and we hope you enjoy the photos as much as we enjoyed taking them.
