They’re Just Breasts

In the state of New York, it is legal for women to go topless. Photographer Jordan Matter took pictures of women in NYC doing just that – as if it was an unremarkable, everyday occurrence for women going about their days – and the results are here.

The exhibition is thought-provoking, frequently beautiful and sometimes saddening, and should be compulsory viewing for anyone who’s ever drawn Power Girl without a bra.

Art Auction Preview: Something Special

Hannah Perlman’s contribution to the auction is a bit different from the other pieces: it hasn’t been drawn yet. That’s because Hannah has donated a piece of custom character art, which she’ll draw to the specifications of the winning bidder, who will also receive both a digital copy of the picture and a signed print (Hannah works primarily digitally, so there won’t be a paper original). This is a great chance for role-players, writers, and anyone with a rich fantasy life to see their characters come to life under Hannah’s talented pen.

The following three images are examples of Hannah’s character art:

The starting bid for this custom piece will be U.S. $18. BID HERE!

You’ll be able to bid on this and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14, 2007!

Art Auction Preview: GWOG

Who’s the tiny, glowering defender of good comics? If you answered “Betty,” you’d be right, but I’m talking about GWOG, the eponymous club-wielding mascot of the Girl-Wonder.org blog. GWOG’s fierce visage was created by Katie Moody, whose design won over some very stiff competition, and who has donated both her original sketches–including another unused design for the  character–and the final GWOG line art:

The starting bid for this set of items will be U.S. $12. BID HERE!

You’ll be able to bid for this and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction from October 7-14, 2007!

Art Auction Preview: Nobody Does It Like Dean

If you’ve been around Girl-Wonder for long–or if you have any truck with the online community of comics artists–then you’re probably familiar with Dean Trippe. In addition to starting the now-famous Batgirl and Supergirl redesign memes (and, most recently, the Stephanie Brown redesign meme!), Dean is a founding member of Project Rooftop, draws and writes the awesome webcomic Butterfly, and makes some of the best superhero–especially female superhero–art you’ll see. This original drawing, one of Dean’s contributions to his Stephanie Brown / Robin redesign meme, is no exception:

The starting bid for this item will be U.S. $35. BID HERE!

You’ll be able to bid on this and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14, 2007!

You’ve gotta see this. An amazing hand-knitted Wonder Woman sweater.

I think that Diana would be proud.

I have a new hero

And that would be artist Mark Newport.
I was reading about this exhibit, when I had to stop and go “Wait…is that a Fantastic Four uniform in the background?”
Yes, it is. And it’s all hand knitted.
Check out this previous exhibit Newport had in Seattle, with several hand knitted superhero costumes. The Captain America one is pretty sweet:

I’m also in love with this print, and this photograph of Spider-man knitting his costume is so charming that almost kind of wish that it were canonical.

Up & Coming

Newsarama’s latest Up & Coming featured Star St. Germain, a multimedia artist who, among many other things, also draws comics. Newsarama’s interview can be found here.

Do yourself a favor and go check out more of Star’s work at her homepage, www.thisisstar.com. I really love her subtle use of color, and how the playful narratives of her illustrations are a bit reminiscent of pin-up art. But all of her work is really quite delightful, so go take a look and see for yourself.
