Girl-Wonder.org Now Accepting Donations for the Second Annual Art Et Cetera Auction!

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Following the success of last year’s auction thanks to the amazing generosity of the comics community, Girl-Wonder.org is happy to announce the second Art Et Cetera auction. The web-based auction will be held from October 6-12 and donations are now being accepted.

Art Et Cetera accepts everything, from comics-inspired jewelry to one-of-a-kind dolls to artist commissions to original superhero artwork. Due to legal issues, submitting fanart of licensed characters or character emblems is strongly discouraged. However, all pieces submitted will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Art Et Cetera is the major fundraising event for Girl-Wonder.org. All proceeds will will be used to cover organizational costs like website fees and expenses for the ongoing incorporation process, as well as merchandise development and promotional giveaway items. Girl-Wonder.org is currently registering for non-profit status. All staffers and board members are unpaid volunteers.

For more information, please contact Hannah Dame at hannah.dame@girl-wonder.org or Karen Healey at karen.healey@girl-wonder.org.

Something Special

Friday, October 5th, 2007

Hannah Perlman’s contribution to the auction is a bit different from the other pieces: it hasn’t been drawn yet. That’s because Hannah has donated a piece of custom character art, which she’ll draw to the specifications of the winning bidder, who will also receive both a digital copy of the picture and a signed print (Hannah works primarily digitally, so there won’t be a paper original). This is a great chance for role-players, writers, and anyone with a rich fantasy life to see their characters come to life under Hannah’s talented pen.

The following three images are examples of Hannah’s character art:

The starting bid for this custom piece will be U.S. $18.

You’ll be able to bid on this and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14, 2007!

Honor Among Punks

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

If Guy Davis’s gorgeous pages piqued your interest in Baker Street, you’re in luck: Guy has also donated three signed copies of Honor Among Punks, the complete Baker Street graphic novel. As if that’s not enough, he’s also taken the time to draw a piece of character art on the first page of each book!

The starting bid for each trade paperback will be U.S. $15.

You’ll be able to bid on these and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14.

Shaenon at Stumptown

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

This past weekend, Girl-Wonder.org made its convention debut at Stumptown Comics Fest in Portland, Oregon. Imagine our joyful surprise when guest-of-honor Shaenon Garrity ran up to our table, introducted herself, and asked if it was to late to donate a piece to the art auction!

What Shaenon gave us was the original art from a strip of her long-running web-and-print sensation, Narbonic. We are still blinking in awe.

The starting bid for this piece will be U.S. $25.

Ross Campbell: Kind of a big deal

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Attention: These items were originally described as prints when in fact many of them are originals.  Prices and lots have been adjusted accordingly.

Ross Campbell is one of those artists whose work I’ve been gaping at for years–first, when he started illustrating for WhiteWolf games, and later as he brought his exquisite painted figure work to comics–Hopeless Savages, Wet Moon, and his upcoming Minx book, Water Baby. He draws some of the most interesting, sexiest, strongest, and most all-around-awesome women I’ve ever seen, and the scope of his work–from superheroes, to college students, to monsters–never ceases to impress me: I won’t be the least bit surprised if someday he’s generally accepted as one of the modern masters of dynamic pin-up art. If you haven’t checked out his art before, now is a great chance, as Ross has given us a small army’s worth of both original pieces and prints.

The following are pieces of Ross Cambell original art:

From Wet Moon:

Ally Is Awesome

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

If you don’t read Sorcery 101, by Kel McDonald, you should probably start. First of all, it’s a cool, really original story. Second, the art’s pretty sweet. Third, Kel herself is a snarky, irreverent, and generally marvelous person who deserves to be all sorts of successful. And fourth, if you read Sorcery 101, you’d know that Ally, a demon hunter, mom, and general-purpose Person To Be Reckoned With is every bit as awesome as she looks (and I’m not just saying that ’cause she sports a Girl-Wonder t-shirt).

This is an original 11″x17″ pin-up drawing of Ally, signed by artist Kel McDonald:

The starting bid for this item will be U.S. $28.

Remember: Auction dates are October 7-14, 2007!

Goggles and a Grin

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

I’ve never read Zap!, but if this marker drawing by artist Pascalle is any indication, I’d better start. From what I gather, Kasey the Stickle is a sort of super-mechanic; with the goggles, gloves, and grin, I’m certainly willing to believe that she can do damn near anything.

The starting bid for this item will be U.S. $22.

Art Auction dates are October 7-14, 2007.

Girl-Wonder Pride

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Know what’s awesome?
Pride High. It’s got characters of all genders, colors, cultures, and abilities. It’s won awards from PFLAG. And it’s the kind of good super-powered teen drama I haven’t seen since the original New Mutants.

Know what’s even awesomer?
Two of Pride High’s signature characters, Scotch and Suravi, showing their love for some of the best girl-geekery on the world wide web!

This is a pencil drawing originally comissioned by Pride High writer Tommy Roddy; it will appear in color as a full-page ad in an upcoming issue of Pride High and shows Scotch and Suravi in t-shirts advertising, respectively, girl-wonder.org and mynerdgirl.com.

The starting bid for this item will be U.S. $25.

You’ll be able to bid on this and other items in Girl-Wonder’s Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14, 2007!

Jack and Jim

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

If you know me at all, you know that Jimm Rugg’s Street Angel is pretty much my favorite comic ever. So, imagine how excited I was when I saw these: Jim’s inks over Jack Kirby pencils (or at least printouts of Jack Kirby pencils) of Wonder Woman!
Both pieces are on 11×17 bristol. They’re from Kirby’s proposal for a Wonder Woman animated series, scanned from Kirby Collector #38, and inked by Street Angel and PLAIN Janes artist Jim Rugg:

The starting bid for each of these drawings will be U.S. $28. And I will be bidding against you ALL THE WAY.

You’ll be able to bid on these and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14.

Gwog!

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Who’s the tiny, glowering defender of good comics? If you answered “Betty,” you’d be right, but I’m talking about GWOG, the eponymous club-wielding mascot of the Girl-Wonder.org blog. GWOG’s fierce visage was created by Katie Moody, whose design won over some very stiff competition, and who has donated both her original sketches–including another unused design for the character–and the final GWOG line art:

The starting bid for this set of items will be U.S. $12.

You’ll be able to bid for this and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction from October 7-14, 2007!
