Conclusion

It’s been 48 years since Jimmy Olsen wished for a female companion for Superman.  In that time she’s been Superman’s secret weapon, a beloved martyr, Lex Luthor’s creation, an angel, and – though it’s easily forgotten sometimes – a teenage girl.

So who is she now? Is she a role model for young girls? Is she inherently flawed as a feminist concept, being in essence a younger, weaker, paler female copy of Superman? Is she a new, exciting take on an iconic character, or is she just eye candy for the boys?

One thing is certain. There’s no question that Supergirl is wish fulfillment.

The question is whose wish she’s fulfilling.
