Supergirl has made an appearance in quite a few
pop songs (and other genres) over the years. Doe-eyed pop tartlets
have declared their status as a Supergirl; angry dumpees have
lamented Supergirl's cruelty; the techno world has apparently
decided that Supergirl spends all her time dancing in outer space.
What does all of this mean? Pop music has
long been a barometer for measuring the nation's collective feeling. How do we
feel about Supergirl? Is there a significant difference in how she's treated by
male writers are opposed to female, or by sheer unabashed pop as opposed to
other genres? Has her musical meaning changed over time?
This is by no means a complete list of
Supergirl songs, but a work in progress. If you've got a Supergirl song
you don't see here, let me know!
[Note: Although it can be argued that for
some instances of the word "Supergirl" in these lyrics a more generic "super
girl" (as in "girl who is super") is intended, I have written them all as
"Supergirl" for consistency's sake, especially as many of the usages are
ambiguous. Part of the reasoning behind this is that I believe it is impossible
in this day and age to use the word "super" as a prefix or adjective without
evoking the concept of Superman, and thus, by extension, Supergirl - most
especially when the "super" precedes "girl."]
All songs belong to their respective
artists.
