I’ve Never Seen The Superbowl…

…But I’ll certainly be checking out this commercial:

Apparently it’s not just automakers like Hyundai and Chrysler with money to burn this Super Bowl Ad Watch weekend. Nope, it’s also the movie industry – it looks like Iron Man will be getting some love in a quick commercial airing this Sunday during the big game.

Robert Downey Jr + Iron Man + shiny, shiny cars = concentrated awesome.

Except Those People Who Live in the Middle of Nowhere and List Books for 1 penny. How Can They Do That?

Friends of Lulu has published a list of women working in the background of comics, although I don’t see our own Rachel Edidin there.  (via POWER in comics)

You’ve probably already seen someone link to this blog full of production photos for WB’s Watchmen. (via Making Light)

Small Beer Press, a publishing house I am fond of, not just for their awesome name and copywriting,  is having tremendous sale on fairly obscure SFnal authors.  Even if you have no particular interest in SF, you may enjoy the ad copy, which I found delightful– something which, believe me, I do not generally find ads.

But why are you so angry?

This link has been making the rounds lately, and I think it’s especially pertinent to G-W.org. Given the recent discussion floating around the blogosphere on the place of anger in activism, this fabulous discussion on the empowering and useful aspects of anger provides a new perspective.

Girl-geeks: our foremothers

Six young women mastered the power of the ENIAC – an 80 foot long, 8 foot tall, black metal machine – and harnessed its power through an archaic programming interface using dozens of wires and 3000 switches. They programmed ENIAC to perform a ballistics trajectory, a differential calculus equation important to the WWII effort, and they succeeded brilliantly. When the ENIAC was unveiled to the public on February 14, 1946, their program captured the imagination of the press and made headlines across the country. Afterwards, the ENIAC became a legendary machine and its engineers (all men) became famous. Never introduced or credited at the ENIAC events of the 1940s, the Programmers story disappeared from history. They became invisible.

Sex workers in SF: what’s up with that?

Aara Tuesday begins strong, and pulls no punches.

I would like to propose a measure called The Frank Miller Test. It will test how much male sci-fi writers are obsessed with whores; if the proportion of female sex workers to neutrally presented female people in his story is above 1:1, he fails.

Trouble with your love life? Date a feminist!

Seriously!
Check out this Rutgers study about feminists in heterosexual relationships. According to the study, both heterosexual men and women report having healthy, stable relationships with a feminist partner.

And, while we all knew that the “You’re just jealous that you don’t look like that” argument was stupid enough to end up on the Bingo card, science has officially confirmed it. It really is a stupid argument:

Their study* also shows that unflattering feminist stereotypes, that tend to stigmatize feminists as unattractive and sexually unappealing, are unsupported.

Oh, snap.

My only complaint is that I’d like to see a study on feminist partners in relationships that aren’t strictly heterosexual, but hopefully we’ll see that soon.
