Art Auction Preview: Nobody Does It Like Dean

If you’ve been around Girl-Wonder for long–or if you have any truck with the online community of comics artists–then you’re probably familiar with Dean Trippe. In addition to starting the now-famous Batgirl and Supergirl redesign memes (and, most recently, the Stephanie Brown redesign meme!), Dean is a founding member of Project Rooftop, draws and writes the awesome webcomic Butterfly, and makes some of the best superhero–especially female superhero–art you’ll see. This original drawing, one of Dean’s contributions to his Stephanie Brown / Robin redesign meme, is no exception:

The starting bid for this item will be U.S. $35. BID HERE!

You’ll be able to bid on this and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14, 2007!

Pride High in Braille

I like being the bearer of good news.
And so, I bring this bit of good news to your attention:

Pride High has attracted blind and visually impaired fans with the positive portrayal of a super-powered member of their community. Suravi, whose name means “sun” in Sanskrit, is a radiant solar blaster with the most powerful attack of her 5-kid squad. Many of her fans have had to rely on commentary from sighted friends to keep with her story. Not anymore! The Braille version of Pride High #1 was recently released! The comic was adapted into short story format by Pride High fan John D. Taylor and transcribed by the LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The Braille adaptation for Issue 2 is currently in production.

The actual embossed Braille cover is protected by the original issue’s cover art on flat paper:

Art Auction Preview: Best of Collection

Filed under: art auction — Rachel Edidin @ 8:15 pm

We all know how awesome Mary Borsellino is–after all, she’s the reason this site exists in the first place, so it’s not like she needed even more good karma. However, she’s dug into her private collection and donated some phenomenal pieces for the art auction:

This page is from Detective Comics #793. Drawn by Pete Woods, it’s from the “War Drums” storyline, which culminated in Stephanie Brown becoming Robin. On this page, bandits attack Alfred Pennyworth and Dr. Leslie Thompkins as twelve-year-old Bruce Wayne watches:

The starting bid for this page will be U.S. $48. BID HERE!

This page is from Batgirl #52 and shows the Girl Wonder herself–Stephanie Brown as Robin–watching with Batgirl as a criminal walks his daughter to school. It features pencils by Rick Leonardi and inks by Jesse Delperdang:

The starting bid for this page will be U.S. $70. BID HERE!

This page is from Tim Sale’s issue of DC’s short-lived Solo title; it’s an awesome scene of Linda Lee (Supergirl) and her boyfriend Richard enjoying the beach:

This page is from issue 16 of Chuck Dixon’s fan-favorite run on Robin, with fully lettered art by Staz Johnson. It features Tim as Robin and Stephanie as Spoiler:

So long, Dan Slott

Dan Slott talks about his run on She-Hulk over at Newsrama.

It was Slott’s run that made me fall in love with Shulkie. I think that his version of Jen will always be what I think of when I think of She-Hulk.

So long Dan, can’t wait to see what you do next!

Fangirl Project!

Two friends of mine, Love Ablan and Jennifer Zern, have started this awesome new endeavor called Fangirl Project to help women “Stake your claim in Fangirl history!” Here’s the blurb from their About page:

The Fangirl Project is part photo book, part video documentary and all labor of love. In December 2006, photographer Love Ablan and writer/videographer Jennifer Zern decided to travel across the country in search of the female equivalent of a “fanboy” — a hardcore devotee deeply immersed in geeky interests like science fiction, fantasy, comic books, gaming, and the like. Eight months later, they’re still going at it. As certified fangirls themselves, the duo embarked on this project for several reasons: to shatter a few myths, to explore a fascinating and wildly diverse subculture, to document the flip side of a presumably male-dominated niche, and to have a good time meeting people with similar passions.Subjects are photographed in their element — either at home, at their favorite comic book store, or at conventions — and interviewed about their obsessions and their views on what it means to be a fangirl. The end product will be a coffee table-style portrait book celebrating the fangirl phenomena. Video interviews will be posted on YouTube intermittently. Photo exhibits in a number of cities will coincide with the book’s release.

So far they have an ever-growing Flickr gallery and they want more fangirls to participate and help the project grow. So go check it out and let your fangirl voice be heard!

Art Auction Preview: A Wonderful Girl

Filed under: art auction,Girl-Wonder — Rachel Edidin @ 10:23 am

A few months ago, Audrey Fox emailed and asked how we’d feel about her playing with some redesigns for our site mascot. “Sure!” we said. The result, which you see below, will soon be joining the existing Girl-Wonder mascots on t-shirts, the site, and other promotional materials as one of the increasingly diverse faces of Girl-Wonder.org.

The following pieces will be packaged together. They include a signed full-color print of Audrey’s mascot design and a signed page of original concept drawings of the character.

The starting bid for this item will be U.S. $16. BID HERE!

You can bid on this and other items at the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14, 2007.
