Stumptown Mid-Con Update

Filed under: Comics, I love you,conventions,Creators,Girl-Wonder — Tags: — Rachel Edidin @ 2:04 pm

WOW.

Today is the second day of Stumptown Comics Fest, Portland’s awesome hometown convention and the site of Girl-Wonder’s first-ever booth, and for the first time this weekend, I have the chance to post an update (Livia and Noah are still hard at work at the con).

Stumptown rocks. It’s full of independent comics and creators, and it’s small and friendly enough to avoid the impersonal chaos of bigger cons. If you don’t know everyone going in, you will by the end of the weekend. It draws not only the best and the brightest of Portland’s (numerous) local talents, as well as folks from all up and down the west coast.  With a $5/day entrance fee, it’s also accessible to fans who might not be willing or able to shell out the heftier admission prices at larger cons.

And apparently, Stumptown Comics Fest–and it’s exhibitors, volunteers, guests, and attendees–loves Girl-Wonder. We showed up and were greeted by a volunteer who first gushed about how much he dug our site, then solemnly asked if it was okay that we’d been bumped up from a half-table to a full table. We spent Saturday talking with fans and creators, and being generally overwhelmed by their tremendously positive responses. Many had heard of the site; some had sought us out to tell us how much they enjoyed the columns, or the comics, or the forums. Those who hadn’t seemed genuinely interested in checking us out. Partway through the day, we ran back to Kinkos to replenish our rapidly disappearing stickers and fliers.  Phil Foglio came to say “hi” and doodle in our sketchbook. Guest of honor Shaenon Garrity stopped by to ask if we were still taking donations for the auction (we’re not, but we made an exception, ’cause c’mon!). Amy Mebberson hung out at our table for a few hours (she’s awesome, by the way!) and drew the cutest superheroes we’d ever seen.

Stay tuned for more updates…

Is Dan Clowes’ Eightball #22 “borderline pornography”?

An English teacher in Guilford, Connecticut assigned Eightball #22 to a freshmen student as a makeup reading assignment. When the parents of the student complained about the content of the book, the teacher was placed on administrative leave, and then resigned from his position.

The New Haven Advocate has run a thoughtful defense of Eightball #22 and Dan Clowes here.

What is equally (if not more so) appalling is the harassment that the student in question has suffered at the hands of her peers, due to the incident causing the departure of a well-liked teacher. The story about the students and parents has been printed in this article by the New Haven Register.

This is horrible. I wish that things like this would promote discussion, but instead a comic book is misrepresented, a teacher loses their job and a poor teenage girl becomes the target of her classmate’s cruelty.

What a bloody mess.

Art Auction Preview: Girl-Wonder Pride

Know what’s awesome?
Pride High. It’s got characters of all genders, colors, cultures, and abilities. It’s won awards from BFLAG. And it’s the kind of good super-powered teen drama I haven’t seen since the original New Mutants.

Know what’s even awesomer?
Two of Pride High‘s signature characters, Scotch and Suravi, showing their love for some of the best girl-geekery on the world wide web!

This is a pencil drawing originally comissioned by Pride High writer Tommy Roddy; it will appear in color as a full-page ad in an upcoming issue of Pride High and shows Scotch and Suravi in t-shirts advertising, respectively, girl-wonder.org and mynerdgirl.com.

The starting bid for this item will be U.S. $25. BID HERE!

You’ll be able to bid on this and other items in Girl-Wonder’s Art Et Cetera Auction, from October 7-14, 2007!

Turtle Power!

Kids, I think that the TMNT officially have their fifth junior member:

NORRISTOWN, Pa. – A pet store has bought a two-headed turtle from a collector and plans to keep it on display, the store manager said. The 2-month-old turtle, actually conjoined red-eared slider twins, fits on a silver dollar.

I predict that this will be the most awesome ninja turtle EVER.

Of course, I was already a fan of vigilantes

Linking to XKCD is generally superfluous, since those who think it’s awesome are already camped out on the rss feed, and those who don’t probably aren’t going to apreciate it the more for having it waved under their noses. That said:

This XKCD fellow: is he single?

Art Auction Preview: Jack and Jim

If you know me at all, you know that Jimm Rugg’s Street Angel is pretty much my favorite comic ever. So, imagine how excited I was when I saw these: Jim’s inks over Jack Kirby pencils (or at least printouts of Jack Kirby pencils) of Wonder Woman!
Both pieces are on 11×17 bristol. They’re from Kirby’s proposal for a Wonder Woman animated series, scanned from Kirby Collector #38, and inked by Street Angel and PLAIN Janes artist Jim Rugg:

“Oklahomans Backing Thor as Fellow Okie”

According to an article at NewsOK.com, Oklahoma residents–even those who don’t usually read comics–are proud as punch of their adopted Norse god (but then, who wouldn’t be?).

Art Auction Preview: GWOG

Who’s the tiny, glowering defender of good comics? If you answered “Betty,” you’d be right, but I’m talking about GWOG, the eponymous club-wielding mascot of the Girl-Wonder.org blog. GWOG’s fierce visage was created by Katie Moody, whose design won over some very stiff competition, and who has donated both her original sketches–including another unused design for the  character–and the final GWOG line art:

The starting bid for this set of items will be U.S. $12. BID HERE!

You’ll be able to bid for this and other items in the Girl-Wonder Art Et Cetera Auction from October 7-14, 2007!
